will be on hand to support Step Up Healthy Floridians campaign--

WHAT: The Bay County Health Department in partnership with PCB Sand Sports will help kickoff the Step Up Healthy Floridians campaign by hosting a celebrity Beach Tennis Tournament on Friday, March 20 at 9:45 a.m. in Panama City Beach.
The Step Up Healthy Floridian event will commence on the beach in front of Sharky’s Restaurant & Tiki Bar with a proclamation by Panama City Mayor Scott Clemons focusing on the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Panama City Beach Mayor Gayle Oberst will follow these remarks with an overview of “Beach Tennis Week”, March 14 – 21.

Highlighting the event, Dr. Jason Newsom, Director, Bay County Health Department has challenged radio personality, Burnie Thompson to a competitive Beach Tennis match.  Each local celebrity will be partnered with a professional tennis player for this exciting competition.

“The goal of Step Up Healthy Floridians and “Beach Tennis Week” is to encourage healthy lifestyle decisions relating to diet and exercise and to promote Panama City Beach as an active, healthy sports beach,” remarked Dan Rowe, president & CEO of the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are enthusiastic about the response and interest in beach tennis and applaud the work of PCB Sand Sports in attracting and promoting this exciting sport in our destination.”

During tomorrow’s event, free introductory beach tennis clinics and lessons will be offered for any participant.

BACKGROUND:
Earlier the year, with the support and partnership of PCB Sand Sports, Panama City Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau and the local community, Beach Tennis USA began utilizing Panama City Beach’s signature white sand to develop local leagues, tournaments and clinics and expose the local community to this emerging sport.
